Up, up, and away - and into the Rocky Mountains.

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

We leave Denver behind and head back into the Rocky Mountains – this time via I-70.  I snap a few pictures through the windshield as we drive along.

We climb to 11,013 feet as we approach the Eisenhower Tunnel from the east.

And minutes later we emerge from the west side.

RUN AWAY TRUCK RAMPS!
Signs warn truckers – and RVers – of the steep grade ahead.  Careening up a Runaway Truck Ramp looks like more fun that we had in mind today, so we stay in the far right lane behind truckers to ease our way down the mountain.

LOST BRAKES?  DO NOT EXIT.  STAY ON I-70.
The signs warn that if you lose your brakes – DO NOT EXIT.  Good idea as you would run straight into a gas station at the end of the ramp.

Our engine brakes do their job and we exit at Silverthorne without incident.  A left turn takes us up Highway 6 to Dillon, and a few miles later we turn onto Swan Mountain Road which leads to Prospector Campground.

We meander our way through the campground toward the farthest west loop that backs to Lake Dillon.  Campsite #58 is the BEST spot in the entire campground – and no one is in it.  It sits on the ridge overlooking the lake.  What a view!  We decide this is the spot for us.  I can hardly wait to show you the storm and sunset that followed later in the day.

See you very soon!  Be safe.
