November
17, 2013: Katherine Landing, Bullhead, AZ.
We have been at Katherine
Landing Campground for 13 days so it’s time to pack up the chairs, pull in the
slides, and move southward again. We’ve
spent a lot of time lounging around camp and taking daily walks down to the
marina. Beyond that we’ve ventured out
for a few quick day trips. This is the walk down to the marina area.
??? What? Who’s on first???
Down near the boat launch
this brown BLM sign is posted. What’s
the question? We have no idea whatsoever. We look to the left as the arrow indicates for
some explanation but it escapes us.
Maybe it’s just us – sometimes we find that’s the case.
Davis Dam: Taming the Colorado River.
The earthen dam is ¼ mile
wide at the base and 200 feet high, and holds back Lake Mohave. It is one in a series of several dams that has
helped to tame the Colorado River through the southwest.
It’s something I’ve never
given much thought to, but all of the displays were very interesting. I now know what a turbine is and what a transformer looks like. Just in case I need that information at some future date.
Crossing back over the
bridge toward our Jeep we notice this sign.
WARNING
Jumping or Diving from Bridge Prohibited
Violators will be Prosecuted
Maybe
add the line – “If You Survive the Fall”
‘Cause
it’s a long way down!
We took a drive through the
nearly barren hills and down to some of the coves along the Arizona side of the
lake. This is perhaps the bluest water I’ve
ever seen, and the rockiest shoreline, and even some of the most arid and stark
landscape jutting up out of the water across the lake.
This is the off-season, so
there are few people around but the campers, mostly “snowbirds” or as they call
them in Australia “cotton buds” (Q-tips ). There’s the occasional traffic going to the
boat launch – mostly on weekends.
It's been relaxing, but we're off for new adventures. So long to the warm breezy
days of swaying palm trees at Katherine Landing. We’re heading to “The Gathering Place –
Quartzsite, Arizona.
Take care. Be safe - until next time.
